Huge Nite HimNite

Hiucovered. Nov. 19. High in Himalayas it is often considered auspicious and good luck when it snows during festive events. But today, it appeared hard luck for some tipsy drivers who had consciously sipped few cans -only- to be sober under the BC`s new booze law, to maneuver their slippery wheels over the white blanket which took some drivers hours to reach home. The first snowfall for the year turned yeti`s Huge Nite into HiuNite. LOL.
The Thitis seemed to have more fun dancing round the chairs amidst loud cheers from their Yetis. Sajana Shrestha, the winner of the musical chair event one of the happiest who would soon dine free at the Vancouver`s cozy Nepali corner to redeem her prize sponsored by Café` Kathmandu. The little gals - Krishangi Dandapure, Angelica Shakya, Maya Bajracharya, Lumanti Maharjan performed their dance to everybody`s delight. A surprise performance of the night was a fabulous belly dance by Kamala Bajracharya.
The leader and the lead guitarist of band Avatara from Vancouver -Shennpen Khymsar- from the city`s death metal music scene made a cool appearance with his hometown soms to perform his fav off metal composition to entertain the guests. Anuj Singh, captain of the Neelo team lifted the Season`s Championship Trophy for the Neelos and Sai Baba Soccer Cup, HimSoc`s first ever tournament trophy, won in the city of Richmond in the month of July of this season.
Ever since Vancouver`s first Nepali band was formed, they have not been able to rock properly, the part time -Yetiz Band- made a huge comeback today. LoL. Pasang, who not only has a huge aura of hair which sits well for his rocking charisma, made a huge impact to showcase the band scene in this august gathering who jived passionately in 1974 ADs Nepali Ho cover. In his hot seat, the new drummer, Pritam beat the *hit out of those drums to get the beat going. Now, who doesn`t know –Jimmy Anish- whose fingers dance like thousand Juggas (worms) that sprout in the grazing fields after the monsoon hits the Himalayas. Poor people danced again around the same Chiya Bari Ma, cover by Niraj. Amrit with his favorite Mamamta Ma almost converted the beautiful Royal Banquet Hall into a time machine to transport all who wanted to drench in romantic hits of Himalayan Kingdom of yesteryears. Vikas tried to thank his master coach, who is popularly known as Pudke Mama in Darj, by singing Mama`s composition Yatra Nai Ho. Our very own Prem KC delivered some of his melodious goods and made many feet tap in some of his select Nepali and Bollywood beats. Soon after the party ended, a dozen Yetis got into stage and danced to their hearts content in their best -last song- and for more than a dozen best last songs! It seemed endless but finally few yetis in good spirit ended the Huge Nite with a good snow ball fight outside which almost made everybody sober for the BC`s fresh snow road. LOL.

BoF re BoF: It`s Neelo!

Vanchetra. Sept. 26. Epic battle of Mahabharata was fought in Kuruchetra between the bros Kauravas and Pandavas, some thousands of years ago, they believe. But today, in a tight sporting battle to win 2010 Season`s title, the HimSoc -Neelo and Raato- bros played a nail-biting critical game in Vanchetra -alias Vancouver! Raatos circled their wagons in an attempt to take a U-turn in game 3 of season`s Best of Five(BoF)Game but Neelos stuck their horns together and prevented the red bulls to shuffle the winning cards which Neelos were holding with two straight wins over Raatos. BoF 2010 reached the climax when game 3 was dismissed with some funny yet serious walkways. Todays` game proved that Yetis can play like real Peles and present handsome sportsmanship and friendship. The Raatos played extremely well with all the star players like Lhundup, Nabin who were well marked by Neelo`s formidable defenders and midfielders like Biju, Prem and Junas. Biju has also earned the distinction of The Most Improved Players of 2010. The long whistle ended with 4-2 score and heralded the winner of BoF 2010. Neelo`s captain yeti Anuj almost jumped and yelled,"This time it`s Neelo buddy!"

Bhayankarbha. July 30. The reigning heartthrob of Mongolian Heart -Raju Lama- flew all the way from New York, his new homeland to perform live for a charity concert to support Himalayan Children, the students of Mangal Dvip School, Nepal. The concert was organized by Yeti Lhundup Sherpa, the former student of the MDS. HimSoc was the proud supporter for this fundraising event. Raju started with his -Nepali anthem like- Mero Nepal and ended with his popular -disco like- Shayad Timro Bato Ma and made many feet go crazy, body got twisted and turned in his tune. Ke Halla Chalecha? Raju is hopping and rocking the Himalayan hearts around the world these days!

Vancouver. July 11. The biggest game on earth-World Cup- aka Jules Rimet Trophy until 1930 is all about numbers. Globally, 204 countries play to qualify for the tournament which happens every 4 years. In the finals 32 teams compete tooth and nail to grab that one trophy made of gold. Locally, the Yetis of HimSoc organized a Watching Together party to watch Spain and Nederland tussle for the top spot for 2010. It's all about numbers...One Yeti provided the space, another yeti brought his Flat 42 inch screen, two yetis transported 5 items of Chinese food, about 30 yetis ate and watched The Finals together, which according to FIFA, is watched by 700 million world wide. No kidding we love golly, hey?

For Hima and Mendo, the darling toddler daughters of yeti Biju and Vikas, it was a special day - 2010 ko Picnic- was their first picnic! This is something the girls will cherish for life when their pele Papa and Apa will tell the story which will go like this-Once upon a time their was a big bridge and that big bridge was called second narrow bridge and under that second narrow bridge you had your first picnic with two dozen Yetis...blah blah blah!

Hamro First Cup

Richmond. June 5. The legendary warriors of this planet is often known and referred by their famous roar - Aayo Gorkhali!. Today, when the yetis of Himalayan Soccer Club of BC (HimSoc) played their first competitive soccer tournament to win the second one day soccer tournament Sai Baba Soccer Cup at South Arm Community Center soccer field in Richmond, the energy and the Josh to take the cup home was like -Aayo Yetis!
Four amateur teams from Lower Mainland participated to compete for the coveted trophy, Richmond's South Arm-I & South Arm-II, Sai BC and HimSoc. Superlatively in tune to win or atleast perform the best, HimSoc yetis meant business from the first minute to the last. Yetis reached the finals beating South Arm-I with a fair score of 5-1.
"You guys play like professionals," said one lady who was watching yetis play their game and - I was like... Sure enough, yetis appeared quite professional today in their freshly painted soccer numbers on their blue jerseys. In a nail gripping final game against South Arm-II, HimSoc took the lead with 2-1 until half-time. At one point during the second half the fate of Yetis hung at 50-50 when there was a surprise equalizer (2-2) by South Arm-II. Yetis were loosing their breath from the long day, stamina was falling apart but the golden goal by yeti Bali wrote a happy story for HimSoc, upseting the reigning champs with 3-2 score. The last whistle called the surge of yaaaaa-hee-haaaaaaa...and all the ecstatic sounds possibly human can make by players and the supporters alike. Perhaps, the taste of hard earned victory simply turned yeti`s excitement into ecstasy! Amidst the sounds hee-haa, the Sai Baba Soccer Cup 2010 was presented to HimSoc captains Anuj and Suman by the organizer, Mr. Venkat Rao himself, who is best known to all as My Friend! Soon team HimSoc posed for a group photograph and was followed by individual shoot with the coveted trophy. Yetis decided to end the long day with a short stay at The Pioneer Pub to do some quick cheers to celebrate Hamro First Cup.

Special Majja Day

Sooorry. April 25: Yetis are popular to maintain Nepali time -you know- but today it was a delight to see yetis showing up in dot time to kick HimSoc`s Special Game with Joos-Soos plus referee at Bear Creek Park in Surrey. But on the other side, it was catastrophic to see our lush green soccer field bustling with Fijian Soccer League! Looking at the charged atmosphere, our pro-referee Tony looked very excited and assumingly said, “So you guys are playing next, eh?”
As soon he learnt that HimSoc Yetis will now hunt for the nearest vacant soccer field, he quipped, “Next time you guys better book the field.”
Anyways, the climax of the story ended up at a beautiful quiet and cozy soccer field very next to our host Sharad yetis Ghar Party venue. Few yetis planned to play Vancouver vs Surrey by putting our new yetis from Coquitlam on Surrey side but looking at the line-up, yetis ended to play a balanced Raato and Neelo. Our referee showed up in his pro-ref garb and matchingly, our yetis entered in their Blue and Red jerseys -imported from Nepal. The sight was special, with pleasant golden sun rays beating beautifully on Blue and Red across the green field. Wow!
Tony`s whistle blew to kick-off the much awaited monthly Special Game. Neelo lead the first half with 1-0 lead and after half-time Raato equalised but soon Neelo scored to lead until the last minute when Raato again equalized to end the game with 2-2 score. Tony left and Yetis kinda debated for a Bhalle Goal but after a quick joos-soos and a quick fun photo session that followed, yeti's josh for Bhalle Goal was renewed into BBQed Bhalle Legs! By the time hungry but happy Yetis reached the Party Ghar, the host yeti Sharad had already kicked–off his second favorite sport of the day to BBQ 52lbs of masaala chicken and 2lbs of marinated veggies to host a Special Majja Day for himsoc yetis. They didn`t say loud but their faces said, "Hee-Haa!"

The Ball's Out

Raincouver. March 21:Perhaps, hundreds of years ago those men who kicked the round thing for the first time in human history to call it soccer or football or golly -felt the same way- as the Yetis of HimSoc did today, when they kicked-off their 2010 soccer season. Hee Haa! The Best Place on Earth, so called, is notorious for its tricky weather for kickers like us who are bit shy to rub shoulders in rain, uncovered. But today, Yetis wrote history differently by defeating the drizzle and coming out all the way from their bed and kicking-off 2010 season when it was pouring! Waving his new long hair Lhundup exclaimed, "Rain on opening day is good luck."
The caps Suman, Anuj were the early birds to assemble along with yeti chaps Biju, Susan, Biman, Karma and Lhundup. Soon Golly Crazy from Surrey yeti Niraj, Pritam and Anish joined in. Nima was next. Basant came. Sharad came, minus his hyped Bhutanese footballers. Deepak showed up and later became the first Yeti to score the first goal of the season. Roshan showed up not to play. Finally, Prem graced the gravel with his sweet little Riya and they were the only spectators for the great day.
The soccer josh in Yetis was so hot and amplifying that the day cleared up soon and the pouring rain stopped miraculously, only for Yetis? Yes, kicked-off!

Vancouver. Nov. 28. The Nepali - King of Pop - Om Bikram Bista rocked the Yetis @HimNite `09, an annual party hosted by Himalayan Soccer Club of Vancouver, BC. The N-KoP was not only busy rocking with his top numbers but was gleaming with smile to honor few yetis for their performance on-field and support off-field.
Well, well well, if you have tackled this little Pele Lhundup Sherpa in the field, you will know how helpless you felt loosing the ball, chasing him frantically and returning panting to your side with another lost goal! Yeah!! Today, Lhundup was awarded for doing all that to you! Fittingly, The Best Player of the Season was awarded amidst loud cheers in this august gathering to Lhundup.
Today, when we talk of Sunday attendance and seasonal performance of Neelo & Raato teams, we owe to captains. Gone are the days when we blame it on A yeti, B yeti, C yeti...for player punctuality and team performance, today, it is much easier to lodge our compliments and supplements to our Captains! This season witnessed some active inputs and leadership from the two caps which brought healthy competition, motivation and excitement all through the season. Aptly, Suman Bimali and Anuj Singh, the captains of Raato and Neelo teams, were honoured for their outstanding leadership and contribution for the 2009 Season. @HimSoc, when it comes to designing posters and printing tickets for all of himsoc`s program and events, the name of one yeti stands out...Yes, you guessed it right, Laxman Shrestha was honoured for his continued support to HimSoc. Royal Banquet Hall was jam packed with more than two hundred yeti guests to party or pose a quick pic with OM BIKRAM BISTHA! Local talents rocked the entertainment line-up for the first half of the nite. The stage lit up with bright performance from all shapes and sizes, like master Jamling Sherpa
jiving like a little Bollywood hero, Dechen Sherpa performing like Hana Montana, Angelica Shakya & Maya Bajracharya dancing like queens, yetis Niraj and Pritam performing their top numbers, yeti Anish Koirala guitaring his talents with Om, yeti Karma Tashi Sherpa hip-hopping like Justin, Biru Maharjan breaking like MJ, Prem KC crooning melodiously like a cuckoo, boom boom by DJ Kalden Sherpa with sound system managed by Amrit Shakya. The event was made possible with volunteers who worked tirelessly behind the scene and with support from community friends and organizations. Some of the names which comes to picture are as follows:

Yeti kid lifts Dana Cup

Denmark, July 6-11. The Dana Cup, known as "the world's most international youth soccer tournament" is held every year in the city of Hjorring, Denmark. It is claimed that, this tournament has the largest number of participating countries in any internationanal soccer tournament. Over the last 25 years, half a million participant from over 100 countries have made it to Dana Cup. Oh, boy!
This boy −Yonden Sherpa− the sporting kid of yeti Kalden Sherpa, the evergreen Khiladi No.1 of HimSoc, has made the whole Yeti World proud to become, perhaps the first yeti kid to kick and win the prestigious Dana Cup of Denmark and play at the Gothia Cup, Sweden. Yonden represented the winning team Roman Tulis Soccer Academy of Canada to lift the U-13 Dana Cup 2009. Tulis beat Germany, 2-1 in the finals.
With a big smile, Yonden says, "My biggest moment was when I scored two goals in the semi-final, and secured the final spot. Eventually we beat Germany in the final. Besides my hard work, I'm lucky that my dad puts in a tireless effort. I also get great inspiration from my mom who was a national volleyball player in Nepal. Also my little sister Dechen, who always cheers for me. After the tournament, my dad and I traveled around Europe, I had an excellent time. I would like to thank all the friends and families in Europe for the great time we had."
Beside his international Dana debut, this year Yonden is selected Metro Vancouver League in which eight districts namely- Vancouver, Victoria, North and West Vancouver, Burnaby, Surrey, Delta and Abbotsford play inter-league. The proud dad yeti Kalden says,"He is doing good but he can do better." Oh, boy!

The Legendary Yetis

I sometimes wonder why the heck we Yetis – Himali Folks– are drawn to this round thing called golly_soccer? I grew up with this game of golly_football in Darjeeling and many of you did in your own cities and hometowns. Wherever we go, we find atleast one Yeti popular in kicking! I feel, some thanks must go to British Bajeharu who must have brought dozens of those leather ko gollys_footballs with them and played with our grandfathers -Yeti Bajes- while their sweetheart Bojus prepared some delicious DalBhaat, RaayokoSaag and Kukhra ko Masu at their Chimtemaato le lipeko Chula! That era was bereft of television and other attractive media like Internet. Thus with my telescopic imagination, I feel this game of golly_football must have physically bounced in our mountains, valleys and communities with those Gore Sahebs. As the ball of time rolled, there came an uninvited sunset over the British Empire and poor British Bajes had to leave for good but the game of golly_football remained with our yetis of those times and even today, wherever we go, the game still kicks with Yetis with the same flavour as with our Baje Peles. Talking of Gorkhey Peles playing golly_soccer, some of our Baje Yetis earned a good name in this field of sport and inspired young yetis of their era and have become Legendary Yetis in their own right. But at the same time many of our Yeti Peles of yester years have sadly gone unsung.
Yetis of the 80`s in Darjeeling, Nepal, Dehradun and Sikkim grew with "Shyam-thapa-kick" , a back-volley kick which our Yeti Shyam Thapa from Dehradun was too famous for. Infact, the general public of Darjeeling and adjoining areas waited for Gold Cup to watch the likes of Shyam Thapa than to peek at FIFA`s World Cup`s pictures in Sportstar, glossy sport magazines. Gold Cup lived upto its glamour and used to be a prestigious annual football tournament held in Darjeeling for clubs from India and Nepal. Today very few know about Late Chandan Singh Rawat who was the first Gorkhey who represented Indian football team in the Helsinki Olympics of 1952.
As the ball of time rolls, the inspiration and love to play golly_football_soccer like the legendary yetis of yesteryears still continues and is passed on generation to generation. One name which will be inscribed forever is Bhaichung Bhutia, young Yeti from Sikkim who is the first Yeti to play in English Football League for Bury Football Club from 1999 to 2002. In the World Cup of 2002, he was one of the ESPN football analysts, sitting along with former heavy weight World Cup players from Europe for billions of viewers glued to TV in Asia! He battled the tough competition of the British soccer for couple of years and returned home to lead Indian National Football team as Captain. Under his able captaincy, India won the prestigious Nehru Cup for the first time in 2007. Another Yeti who is making the Gorkhey world proud today is Sunil Chhetri. Born in Darjeeling, this yeti started his professional football with some local club in Delhi. Soon with his loaded skills in ball control and bullet power shots, he moved on to play with prestigious clubs like Mohun Bagan and East Bengal in Kolkata. Recently, bro was in London to do some trial games to play in Englsih League.
Another yeti whose name is like Pele of Brazil, is, Ganesh Thapa of Nepal! He headed Nepal’s Football team to numerous international tournaments. He later played professional football in Bangladesh. Today he is the President of All Nepal Football Association (ANFA) and South Asian Football Federation. He continues to inspire yetis of all age towards this game and works hard for the development of sports in Nepal. These days he is seen presiding over various sports tournaments held in South Asian countries.
But there were other Yetis in our villages, cities and hometown who were local heroes for golly_soccer lovers and were highly skilled players. Unfortunaely, there names could not echo beyond the limited opportunities but it will be a fitting salute, if we remember their names by-heart and picture their faces in our thoughts and say, "Bro, because of You...I am a HimSoc Yeti today."

Yeti becomes Prez

Snowcovered. Dec.29: Last night when the roads across Bhankuver was frozen with black ice with drivers going crazy behind their wheels, HimSoc's Advisor Yeti Ratna Rai walked victorious in his self chosen path to become unanimously declared President of Nepal Cultural Society of British Columbia, coolly called NCSBC. During his play days with HimSoc, yeti Ratna R usually played @ mid-field and made excellent passes to his fellow strikers. At times, when the pass was right, he himself made some surprise goals. Yeti RR has demonstrated commendable team spirit as a soccer player with HimSoc and was popular with some classic hamjayega jokes off the field. He has always been a well wisher for HimSoc and has provided valuable advices to HimSoc. Currently, yeti RR sits as one of the active advisor for team HimSoc.
It looks, today Nepalese community in this snowcovered Bhankuver is welcoming his josh and volunteerism to serve the society as Prez. Recently, the whole world witnessed an unprecedented wind of change sweeping across the border, now, on the lighter side, shall we call this yeti, Ratnabama? Who knows, given a right team, this yeti may score some fantastic goals for NCSBC too.

Raincover, Nov.15. HimSoc`s much awaited 2nd dinner and dance party: HimNite took-off with much hangama in this beautifully renovated Royal Banquet Hall in Vancouver today. The best of the guests started rolling in by 6pm through the heavily guarded entrance officiated by none other than macho Sharad with this top team. Ticketmaster Junas was seen busy counting cash and tallying names. Guests were warmly welcomed and ushered by Suman, Aangbabu, Laxman and Raju. The hall looked warm and inviting with eager audience to have a glimpse of yetis and yeti-kids performing live on stage to the tunes and styles of Hannah Montana, Michael Jackson, 50 Cents and Udit Narayan by Dechen, Biru, Karma and Susan respectively. For their love for Himal and Nepal, the Canadian rock band Sound System, rocked the Nepalese crowd with their loudest sound, for free! The impact of their loud system was literally visible on the faces of some guests who preferred to stand and chit-chat in some quieter corners, away from the cranked sound system. The young no-name band by Anish, Niraj, Pritam and Devashish stole the show with their punchy Chiya Bari Ma and Mercedez Benz.
The eight minute solo lead piece Glasgow Kiss by the coolest lead guitarist in town Anish, was the highlight of live music concert in todays HimNite. Later, the part-time band 'Yetiz' with Anish, Amrit, Devashish, Prem and Vikas tried to make some good music with Bheda ko Unn Jasto and Bir Gorkhali but the musicians were seen sliding behind the stage curtains to pretend as if the music was coming from outside. DJ-Kalden did the magic with his newly found passion of DJ`ing and made the crowd alive with trendy folk remixes, churke beats and some hip-hops. The sparkling disco lights splashing the skins of frenzied floor dancers, helped to hide the oozing perspiration on their excited skin until midnight. Unable to escape from his tough duties, yeti Nima, manning the precious liquid fort called bar was seen tapping his feet inside his well guarded haven.
The happy feets of Raato yetis will rest in peace for this winter with their minds engraved with sweet memories of posing with their Seasons Championship Cup on stage with yeti Nagesh, one of the veteran retired player of HimSoc. The august gathering of HimNite also had the priviledge of watch the body building champ, Mr. Nepal-Biru M. with his glittering gold medals on stage today. The slide-show handcrafted by Rajib, which included pictures of yetis, families and friends, collected and compiled from past himsoc moments were beautifully displayed on huge monitors from the moment party door opened until the last dance.
When the season gets hot, a yeti eagerly waits to kick every week. Believe it or not, now the yetis and their friends have started waiting for HimSoc's wrap-up party every year with the same flavour and anticipation like they do for every Soccer Sunday.

Sorrey, Nov.1. Today about fifteen Yetis from HimSoc brought the unique Nepalese culture of 'Deuse' at the door steps of Nepalese families living in the Canadian cities of Surrey and Vancouver, British Columbia. Yetis sang and danced in the traditional Deusure dhuns bringing those Tihaar atmosphere alive in this part of the world. This culture Deuse can be compared to Halloween`s trick or treat of Western culture, except the gifts involved in Deuse is money. The culture is so unique that after the Deuse Bhais (brothers) are gifted with cash, the Deuse Bhais in-return bless the home with fairy tale wishes. It is often said, "Home is Where the Heart Is," but today Yetis felt, "Nepal is where the Deuse Is."

Raato Rocks 2008

Raincouver. Oct. 19. Today HimSoc's last game of the season ended seven minutes early because of the Fall sunset which made the ball barely visible to kick but Raato emerged bright and victorious to lift 2008 Season's Championship in a close sporting battle of 4-3. Today's game was the finale of best-of-five games in which both Raatos and Neelos were head-locked with 2-2 wins. The game turned interesting when the Neelos ended their first half with 2-1 lead. Neelos put Raaotos under tremendous pressure at times but the agile frontline Yetis of Raatos made all the difference in the end. The game seemed fair as the Neelos played with 9 Yetis against 8 Raato Yetis in the first half and with 8 Neelos against 9 Raatos in the second half. The speculations ran high after the game within Yetis, 'what-if' the ball was visible for the full game, perhaps the Raatos would have fired some more goals or maybe the Neelos would have equalized or the game would have rolled into a tie-breaker kicks but any imagination will now remain an illusion for any Yeti for eternity, as the mysterious snowman in the Himalayas itself! Whatever be it, as it is said, "May the best team win", and certainly for Raatos, it is time to say, Hip Hip Hurray!
